Overview

A leading global appliance brand wanted to evaluate its potential for entering Japan with a premium coffee machine portfolio, recognizing that success would require more than transferring global products. Differences in usage habits and category maturity meant the client needed a clear view of real market fit.

We began by immersing ourselves in Japanese households to understand daily coffee consumption habits, and how existing solutions are used in context. A market safari additionally showed the client team how café culture influences trends and what role retail plays in product discovery. These insights informed a deeper exploration of the purchase journey and decision dynamics through qualitative sessions, before being validated and scaled through quantitative analysis.

Results

The project provided a clear view of how premium espresso machines are perceived and used within the Japanese market, and where the real barriers between interest and adoption lie. The client gained clarity on behavioral fit, category understanding, and the true addressable audience, enabling a more focused and realistic approach to market entry.
